  1. RATIONALE

The training in Human Resources Management is key to the development of nay nation. It has now been generally accepted that human resource is a major, if not the most important resource in an organization. As Kenya embarks on the industrialization process it requires individuals who may have had a chance of attaining a University degree yet they need middle level training to enable them function productively in their organizations. The course will be available at all the Extra-Mural Centres i.e. Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Nakuru, Nairobi and Kakamega through the face to face mode. Later the course will be also offered through the distance learning mode.

This course will fill a gap in training need and will enable the University of Nairobi to contribute to the Human Resource development in Kenya. It will also enable the University of Nairobi to access its training to all deserving persons all over the country.

Other training institutions other than the University of Nairobi examine the current course of Personnel Management offered. Potential diploma students have been requesting for a diploma course offered and examined by the University of Nairobi.

Diploma in Human Resource Management

  1. COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION

 

    1. The course is divided into three parts each equivalent to one semester of four (4) months each.
    2. The student will take all the eleven (11) course units.
    3. Each course unit will be covered in 45 contact hours of study.
    4. The course will be delivered through lectures and tutorials
    5. The course will take one calendar year
    6. No candidate will be registered in this course for more than six semesters (equivalent to 2 years)
    7. The student will be expected to carry out a Research Project which will constitute two (2) units.

Diploma in Human Resource Management

  1. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The following shall be the minimum entry requirements for the Diploma in Human Resource Management.

    1. KCSE Mean Grade C or above with C- in Mathematics or Commerce, or Economics. Or Accounts and C- in English or Kiswahili or a bridging course grade C- in Mathematics, or Kiswahili or English from a recognized institution.
    2. KCE Div. III or above with a pass in Mathematics or Commerce or Accounts and a pass in English or Kiswahili.

OR

    1. ‘A’ level Certificate with at least one principal pass

OR

    1. Professional Certificate from recognized Institutions, for example Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), National Polytechnics, Bandari College, Kenya Medical Training Centre (KMTC), Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), Kenya Accounts & Secretarial National Examinations board (KASNEB), School of Monetary Studies, Kenya Institute of Bankers, Kenya Co-operative college, Pitman level 1, University of Nairobi Courses or any other relevant Certificate that the University may recognize. In addition, the applicant must have a minimum K.C.E Div III or K,C.S.E. mean grade C-

 

OR

 

    1. A professional certificate plus a minimum of pass in either Maths, Commerce, Accounts, Economics, Agriculture OR KCSE D+ with a minimum D+ in either Mathematics, Economics, Accounts, Commerce or Agriculture.

 

OR

 

    1. P1, S1 Certificate from a teacher training college.

 

OR

 

    1. A degree and above from a recognized University.

Giving skills and knowledge for the candidates to manage human resource activities in any organization

Exam Regulations

Diploma in Human Resource Management

  1. EXAMINATION REGULATIONS
    1. The examination will be governed by the general examination regulations of the University of Nairobi.
    2. For the award of the diploma in Human Resource Management, a candidate will be required to pass in all prescribed course units taken
    3. Each course unit shall be examined by a two (2) hour written examination at the end of the semester during which the course was offered.
    4. The written examination shall constitute 70% of the marks in each course unit while course work constitutes 30%
    5. Course work assessment shall comprise assignments and test
    6. The pass mark shall be 40%
    7. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in any unit, with a mark below 40% may, on the recommendation of the Board of examiners and approval if Senate, re-sit the failed examination(s) during the next semester examinations.
    8. A candidate who fails in the re-sit examination9S0 be required to repeat the failed units.
    9. A candidate shall only be allowed to repeat a course unit for three semesters.
    10. The project will be marked out of 100%. The pass mark shall be 40%.  The appointed supervisor will grade the project.
    11. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiner in the project with a mark below 40% may on the recommendation of the board of examiners and approval of senate re-do the project.
    12. A candidate shall be allowed to re-do the project for a maximum of three semesters.

 

  1. TRANSFER OF CREDIT.

 

 

Applicants who have undertaken equivalent courses recognized by senate may, on the                recommendation of Faculty and approval of the Senate, be allowed to transfer credits up to a maximum of one-third of courses offered in the programming a student desiring to receive credit for any prior courses work will need to make a formal request giving the following information.

 

A list of the University of Nairobi courses which the student is interested in getting credit.

Official transcripts indicating courses that may be equivalent

Description syllabus/outline for the courses which the applicant seeks transfer of credit

 

  1. CLASSIFICATION OF THE DIPLOMA

 

The final award of the Diploma in Human Resource Management will be based on the average marks obtained in all course units taken and shall be classified as follows:-

 

Pass with distinction   -           70% and above

Pass with credit           -           56% to 69%

Ordinary pass              -           40% to 55%

Fail                              -           39% and below
