Message from the Dean: School of Continuing and Distance Education

The School of Continuing and Distance Education remains the oldest and largest school offering open and distance education in Kenya. It continues to be a center of intellectual life, a locus of research activity, a resource for professional development, and a key player in the growing global network of scholarship. This success results from a sustained commitment to quality coupled with a strong enduring desire to become center for academic excellence. There has been a clear, compelling vision and a strong desire to achieving set strategic goals.
The School offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to national and international students. Our strength is attributed to inclusive education for people with all types of disabilities and challenges. It is situated at Kikuyu campus near Kikuyu town 25 KM West of Nairobi. The origin of the School can be traced to Koibatek (currently in Baringo County) as an Extra Mural Centre for the then Makerere University College in 1953, and has continued to grow. Presently the School has a student population approaching 13, 234 taking various degrees and diplomas. It is comprised of two departments namely Department of Open Learning and Department of Educational Studies. Since its establishment in 1953, the School has grown and expanded across the country in terms of student population through its now virtual Learning Centres. The School meets the expectations of its stakeholders by ensuring that the programmes offered are of high quality using diversified modes of instructional delivery( open, distance and e-learning). The School has established linkages and collaborations with similar institutions locally and internationally.
The school offers a diverse range of academic programmes, which are offered in the two departments. The diversity of programmes and disciplines encourages ideas to be shared across disciplines and promotes multidisciplinary teaching, research and community service. The 24 programmes that are offered include: PhD in project management, PhD in Distance Education, Ma in project management, MA in Peace education, Masters in Distance Education, Post graduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management, Post graduate Diploma in Human resource Management, Bachelor of Education arts(by distance mode ), Bachelor of education science( by distance mode), Bachelor of Adult education and community development, Bachelor of project management, Diploma in Business management, Diploma in human resource management, diploma in purchasing and supplies management, diploma in public relations, diploma in project management, diploma in sales and marketing, diploma in guidance and counselling, certificate in Business management, certificate in human resource management, certificate in purchasing and supplies management, certificate in public relations, certificate in project management, certificate in sales and marketing, certificate in guidance and counselling,
Our graduates fit very well in public and private sectors nationally or internationally. The alumni are found in all organizations, ministries, consultancies, non-governmental organizations and self-employment. We have produced great men and women of this country such as senators, governors, Members of county assembly, Members of parliament, lecturers, teachers, professors, project managers, researchers, trainers and other agencies like UN, WFP not to mention the very powerful positions in the government like PS, county commissioners and other leadership positions. Students who perform well benefit from scholarships from the government and other donors. Currently we have students who won the prestigious Queen Elizabeth11 Diamond Scholarship to study I Toronto, Canada.
